We all know that cats are purrfectly peculiar creatures. They like the most random things, like the bottle cap that fell on the floor instead of their $30 feather toy you just bought them. It may seem like they're doing this just to spite you, but we pawmise you, they aren't. In a new viral TikTok trend, cat owners are buying their kitties simple slabs of concrete - and their cats are pawsitively obsessed with them! But the question is, why?

Well, cats love any surface that is different than the one they're on. They view the surface they're lying on as their territory, so if they are lying on your living room floor, they have a lot of area to "protect" - this explains why cats love enclosed spaces more. The rough, purrfectly porous texture of the concrete also purrvides them with ample opportunity to scent-mark, and it can scratch that itch you've been trying to get to for weeks!     I would take my late cat on little excursions in the yard. He would dive right for where the concrete was. Especially if it had been in the sun. Toasty, textured and full of smells. I think I would love it as well if I was a cat.

    miscreantmom 18h ago My cats generally don't like squishy surfaces. A rug or some laundry (preferably clean) are fine but a pillow or even a mattress pad are not. I wonder if it's because it impedes their maneuverability, like when you can't get out of a really soft couch.

    guard it. But if they can sit on a bag/slab/box/bed/tape outline, it creates a much smaller territory within the larger space that is easier to protect and makes them feel more at ease.

    EitherCoyote660 • 19h ago It's not the concrete. It's the shape which reminds them of a box. Put a square of flat cardboard or even fabric on the floor and they will do the same thing. It's something new to explore, deposit their scent on, claim, whatever.
